Vertigo

"Vertigo is something other than the fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified we defend ourselves."
-Milan Kundera. Unbearable Lightness of Being.

concidence?

As I was doing some reading for my anthropology class, I came upon this section:
There is a North American Tribe called Nacirema and their mythology says that "their nation was originated by a culture hero, Notgnishaw, who is otherwise known for two feats of strength--the throwing of a piece of wampum across the river Pa-To-Mac and the chopping down of a cherry tree in which the Spirit of Truth resided."

um....does that remind anyone of the story of George Washington, who as a child chopped his father's cherry tree, but when asked told the truth, showing what a great guy he was?

whaaaa??? so damn cool.

personhood and shadows

I stumbled upon this...so amazing: http://www.dailydawdle.com/2010/08/top-10-examples-of-brilliant-shadow-art.html

On an unrelated/only barely related note...

There are some cultures in which a baby is born and only at the age of 6, when they can be a contributing member of the social community, do they become a person with rights to life, etc. The age of personhood varies from culture to culture. For some, the biological birth and social birth is one and the same, for others it is much different. When do you guys think that a baby/fetus/child becomes a person-a distinct being with rights to life and community?
