s&m isn't REALLY about violence. perhaps sometimes the violence is 'real' but more standardly, the s and the m are designed for pleasure and include a built in forfeit/escape plan. Also, alarmingly often those who are assaulted/abused are later only attracted to re-enacted abuse. It's not so straight forward to say portraying violence=bad message. Perhaps some benefit from feeling less abnormal, perhaps rihanna herself is attracted to this kind of thing...
